IGs and HTE have chosen to play in Wisconsin and Minnesota to support the current movements in this region against extreme mining practices and destructive fossil fuel development.

In Wisconsin, a mining company called Gogebic Taconite helped draft a law earlier this year that allows it to contaminate wetlands in the watershed of the Bad River Ojibwe just a few miles from Lake Superior. Governor Scott Walker and the Republican legislature have done the company’s bidding. The eleven sovereign Native governments in the region have united in opposing the new mining law. Joining them are environmentalists, farmers, and those who make their living via tourism.

In Minnesota, mining corporations are moving into the northern lakes in a new era of extreme mining- with huge impacts on water, wild rice and wolves. In turn, the new electric demands for mining operations are relying on coal, projected to come from the northern Cheyenne homelands in Montana. Pipelines carrying tar sands oils are moving through the region, and new proposals are being forwarded to double the movement of oil through the north woods. All of this puts our water in danger. Honor the Earth has worked with communities on the front lines for the past two decades, and now we share these stories and ask for your help to protect our Mother Earth.

The shows will feature a full length acoustic duo set from INDIGO GIRLS and words from the Executive Director of HONOR THE EARTH, WINONA LADUKE.

JENNIFER KREISBERG, from the Tuscarora Tribe of North Carolina will open
the shows with a powerful Calling Song to welcome everyone. The IGs first met Jennifer when her group ULALI performed for HONOR THE EARTH shows in the early 90’s. She lives her life as a Mother, Singer, Composer, Producer, Teacher, and Activist!

We are very excited to welcome to each show a local speaker who will represent the issues in the region, as well as a special musical guest.

In Madison, WI, we’ll have singer/songwriter, KELLY JACKSON from Lac Du Flambeau. Her newest CD, Spirit of a Woman has been nominated for 4 Native American Music Awards and is available now. Kelly will be playing her first HTE event and we are grateful for her participation.
