A weekend to learn about the proposed strip mining in Penokee Hills

You are cordially invited to join the Penokee Hills Education Project and friends for a weekend of community building, education and networking as we learn about the proposed strip mine in the Penokee Hill

Camping in the group site at Copper Falls is reserved on a first come first serve basis and is provided free until the maximum capacity is reached. Families and Elders will be prioritized in this space. There are currently individual sites available.  Penokee Hills Hootenanny and Camp-Out

Events Schedule

Hootenanny:  adj. to call together the required personnel needed to accomplish the prodigious assignments placed on them.  OR, now, most commonly, it refers to a folk-music party. 

Friday, September 30th:

5pm:  Welcome and Registration at Highbridge Sports Complex

7pm:  Get together for early arrivals around the fire.

Saturday, October 1st

Session 1

9:30 -10:00 am Overview of the day’s activities

10am-noon:  Explore and get a feel for the land that GTac is proposing to strip-mine with a guided tour of the proposed mine site.  Come prepared with comfortable clothing, footwear and snacks for a moderately strenuous walk.  Some of the tour may be off trail.

 

Session 2 2-4pm:  Waterfall tours and sight seeing will be both guided and self guided.

Session 3 3-5pm:  Family Time at Highbridge Hills!  Bring the whole family for planned activities for children of all ages that will provide education about the affected watershed and the importance of the surrounding ecosystems.  Please plan to stay with your children.  Snacks will be provided. 

5 pm:  John Boy’s famous Chili (for free) at Copper Falls.  Food donations are welcome.  Please bring your own bowls/silverware. 

5:30-7:30pm:   Speakers and Panel Discussion

8pm:  Music, Talking Circles, and Sharing time

Sunday, October 2nd:

10am-Noon:  Civil Disobedience Training and “Where do we go from here” Discussion
