Gogebic Taconite, which wants to mine for iron ore in Ashland and Iron counties, has taken an interesting approach to reports that asbestos-like minerals have been found on the proposed mining site: The company is trying to shoot the messenger.

First, the company essentially questioned the integrity of a state Department of Natural Resources geologist who found a sample of the potentially harmful material. Then, when other samples, were reportedly found by a Northland College geologist, a company spokesman said, "What you have is opponents trying to bring out information that fits their arguments."

The company did say it could deal with the asbestos issue if there is one, but it's main concern seems to be the motivation of the messenger rather than whether there's actually potentially harmful material on the site. That's sending the exact wrong message to Wisconsin residents.

Government officials tasked with approving the mine should take note.
